A Threadbare of Economic Development

The economic prosperity and social progress depends on the friendly atmosphere in a country where a healthy society is inevitable as the democratic right of the people's mandate. Voting rights of the people has been established for peaceful socio-economic stringency, when it is the only desirable condition for a country's symbolic and demographic disposition. February 16, 2000 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on tribal gunmen had kidnapped Torben Mikkelsen and Nils Hulgaard from Denmark, and Tim Selby, all working for CAMPSAX in Denmark-funded road development projects, from a place called Satero refractory Matha on Gunjapara in Naniarchar Upazila at about 05:00. The three Europeans were on their way back from a research work in a pickup. Dave Weston, a British consultant, and Mohammed Mustafa, the driver of the pickup, was asked to go to a nearby police station with a letter written in Bengali, demanding TK. Nine crore ransom for the release of hostages. Weston was informed of Rangamati Police Station to the incident around 08:00. In the 17th February has become familiar with the relevant event had on policemen and soldiers started Cordon Kalapahar area where the hostages were believed to have disabilities.

According to diplomatic and other sources, a new group of people with sophisticated weapons like AK 47 had taken over responsibility for the hostages from them. One of the hostages after being released said that the head of the new group was a 42-year-old highly educated Chakma, spoke good English, known among his fans as "Captain." He said "Captain" was a former "Shantibahini officer 'highly respected by his followers for his meticulous scholarship of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the guerrilla war. During their captivity, the hostages were made to walk at night through intensive forest and hills to new hiding places in the group and sometimes they could also see the light hilltop army positions "not so very far away." The new captors were well disciplined and they had to change the guards regularly. Even in the beginning, claimed some of the captors themselves to be members of the Peoples United Democratic Front (UPDF), the hostages said later that they had not been involved in any political activities, but wanted money to "Welfare Chakma People". Tim Selby said, "if the hostages were absolutely horrified that he felt helpless during the entire period." But it is interesting to note that the captors had shown that they are foreigners very large and noble way.

The authorities have long communication with the kidnappers through local UP chairmen and leaders who work as middlemen. The kidnappers, in a note that demanded the withdrawal of the army Cordon as a precondition for negotiations. The authorities had frizzed army movement in the "red zone" area Kalapahar but refused to withdraw the cordon. Rescue work started as soon as the troops were secured by the presence of kidnappers in the Chakma and Marmande villages Nakshachhari and Daijjyapara in remote inaccessible hill forest, six miles north of Kashkhali. Army raids extended up to four villages in the red zone area and NABS around 28 relatives of the kidnappers. Kalparanjan Chakma and Dipanker Chakma was appointed to conduct negotiations as coordinators, 25 February. February 27 has an authority received a letter sharply from February 22 from the hostages. Three negotiation experts, including two from Scotland Yard had joined the government the next day and made every effort to make a negotiated end to the crisis.

The brilliant officers were surprised observed position and feelings of kidnappers at midnight. The gang numbering around seven fired back when they had some empty shot. As the kidnappers felt they had surrounded the kidnappers gave up and fled after the firefight for about 12 minutes, and therefore a thorough search of the area resulted in the rescue of three hostages. The kidnappers warned the three foreign engineers in the evening of March 16 on their upcoming release. Sources said that the group had gathered around a hostage and sent them home Chakma woven rope and handbags for their wives and family. So they had begged apologies to the three foreigners "All trouble some ness caused their families these days and bade them farewell. Around eight in the evening, was held hostage, led by" Captain "had to walk for about six hours before reaching a place where the three "general manager" men in white shirts waiting. The three men presented themselves as members of the Bangladesh Red Crescent. As 'Captain' shook hands with the hostages and disappeared into the dense forest. Around 5: 00 PM, the next morning, they had three foreigners seen a man crossing a rice paddy with a torch in his hand. Once the man came detail was the Red Crescent men and foreigners entered into a "cottage" and asked to wait. When you have closed the door to the "cabin" out, disappearance of the four men. About half an hour later, about 6:00, Army troops entered the cabin with bags of oranges, grapes and cans of Coke and announced, "You have all been rescued by the army."

The kidnappers had earlier demanded a ransom for TK. nine crore, allegedly later reduced it to TK. one crore and finally to TK. 40 lakh. But it could not be confirmed. This applies officials had denied any dealing with kidnappers. The three Europeans had after three days medical check-up at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka, gone to their respective countries on March 19, 2001. The hostage drama finally ended, but it has left many questions doubtful. There is no denying the fact that flagitious complex was done with the honorable foreigners in the Chittagong Hill Tracts is nothing more than a threat, and shabby against the economic development of our country. In the future, we should learn a thing as peace and quiet is important for economic prosperity and political stability in a country.
